Fall Open House Session Descriptions

Session 1: Academic Overview

Discovering Data, Math, and Natural Sciences:  Learn more about majors and minors in our natural science, math, and data science areas. This session will include an overview of the college, a faculty panel, and a question and answer session.

Discovering Humanities and Social Science:  Join the College of Arts and Science to learn about our world-class programs in human behavior, society, politics, culture, and language. Our immersive, hands-on student experience and opportunities in research, internships, and study abroad/away will prepare you for a range of exciting careers. Engage with our faculty and students during our tours and break-out sessions.

Department of Art Academic Overview:  Join faculty and students from the Department of Art for an in-depth conversation about the visual arts at Miami. Students will also receive advice about developing a competitive visual arts portfolio for admission. It is recommended to pair this academic overview with the department's tour.

Department of Theatre Academic Overview:  Join faculty and students from the Department of Theatre for an in-depth conversation about theatre at Miami. Students will also learn about the department's audition process for admission. It is recommended to pair this academic overview with the department's tour.

Department of Music Academic Overview:  Join faculty and students from the Department of Music for an in-depth conversation about music at Miami. Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship (AMAE) Academic Overview:  Join faculty and students for an in-depth conversation about how AMAE's interdisciplinary program combines the arts with business. It is recommended to pair this academic overview with the program's tour.

Department of Emerging Technology in Business + Design (ETBD) Academic Overview:  Interested in digital marketing, content creation, website/app user experience and interface design (UX/UI), game design and development, immersive/reactive art/media, and beyond? Join ETBD faculty and students for an-depth conversation about their interdisciplinary program and how to apply. It is recommended to pair this academic overview with the department's tour.

College of Engineering & Computing Overview and Student Panel:  Join us for an overview of the programs available for students in the College of Engineering and Computing and a Q&A panel with current students.

Education, Health, and Society: Academic Overview:  Join us to learn about the academic programs in the College of Education, Health and Society: Education, Kinesiology, Nutrition, Social Work, and Sport Leadership & Management. This session will include an overview of the college, a student panel, and question and answer session.

The Farmer School Difference: Join us to learn about the Farmer School of Business including life at Miami, student organizations, internships, and academic experiences. Following this presentation, students may choose departmental breakout sessions to attend with faculty available for Q&A.    

Get to know the Nursing Program:  Join us for a session that includes an overview of the Miami University BSN program curriculum, outcomes, competitive admission process, and a panel with current Nursing students.


Session 2: Building Tours and Select Presentations

Anthropology: Archaeology and Biological Lab Tours:  Get a glimpse of our archaeology artifacts and our hominid bond collections during the tour of our fabulous teaching labs.  

Biology, Microbiology, and Mallory Wilson Center for Healthcare Education Tour and Poster Sessions:  Tour and poster sessions. 

Chemistry & Biochemistry Department Tour:  Learn about ongoing research in the department and tour classrooms and facilities.

Earth, Environment, and Sustainable Places:  You will learn about the majors and career opportunities in the departments of Geography & Sustainable Development, Geology & Environmental Earth Science, and the Institute for the Environment & Sustainability, as well as tour our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

Mathematics, Data Science & Statistics: Meet the Chair and Current Students:  Stop by and say hello to our department chairs and current students.

Media, Journalism, and Film Production Tour:  Visit Williams Hall to learn about film, TV, and audio production opportunities and to tour the MJF audio and TV studios and Redhawk Radio. 

Physics Department Tour:  Tour stops include active-learning classrooms for first-year courses; sophomore labs; student areas for studying and club meetings, and a visit to research labs where undergraduates participate in faculty-mentored research, some starting their first year. Opportunity to talk with faculty and current students.  

Political Science Welcome and Ghost Tours:  Meet the Chair of Political Science and hear about how it all started at Miami. And learn about majors, study abroad, Inside Washington, and much much more.  

Psychology: Overview and Self-Guided Tour:  Brief introduction by Psychology faculty followed by a self-guided tour.  

Sociology, Gerontology, Criminology, and Organizational Leadership Open House:  Learn about Miami's programs in Organizational Leadership, Criminology, Sociology, and Gerontology.

Speech Pathology and Audiology Information Session and Tour:  Brief overview of the department, tour of the major spaces and question and answer sessions. 

Your Story, Your Future: How the Humanities Prepare You for a Changing World:  Explore programs in and career paths from History, Literature, Philosophy, World Languages, and International Studies. Learn about the Howe Center for Writing Excellence and the Special Archives at King Library.

Department of Art Tour:  Tour the Deparment of Art's spaces in the Art Building and Hiestand Hall! It is recommended to pair this tour with the department's academic overview.

Department of Theatre Tour:  Tour the Department of Theatre's spaces in the Center for Performing Arts and Hiestand Hall! Highlights include the Gates-Abegglen Theatre and Studio 88 Theatre. It is recommended to pair this tour with the department's academic overview.

Customize Your Creativity: Creative Arts Opportunities for All Majors:  This presentation will highlight how Miami students continue their artistic pursuits inside and outside classroom. Learn how all students can combine creative arts majors, co-majors, and/or minors with their other academic interests, get involved with performances, join arts-related students organizations, and so much more!

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department Visit:  Experience the CEC departments by interacting with current students and faculty and learn firsthand what it means to be a CEC student at Miami University.

Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering Department Visit:  Experience the CEC departments by interacting with current students and faculty and learn firsthand what it means to be a CEC student at Miami University.

Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health Lab Tours:  Visit the state of the art Kinesiology and Dietetics/Nutrition Labs, and see a virtual cadaver and Food Science equipment.

Admission 101:  Not sure how to access the Common Application, the difference between Early Decision and Early Action, or the difference between a scholarship and grant? This is the session for you! We will go over how to apply, what we look for in an application, and provide information on the difference between scholarships and need-based financial aid. This session is recommended for first-generation college students and those who aren't sure where to begin when it comes to the application process.

Honors Information Session:  Are you interested in being a Miami University Honors College student? Attend this session, led by Executive Director Dr. Zeb Baker, where you will learn about what sets the Honors College experience apart and how to make the most of your college education.    

Campus Tours:  Join us for a 45-minute walking tour of Miami University led by our student tour guides. This tour will highlight academics and student life, all while giving you the chance to hear firsthand what it’s like to be a Miami student. Please note: Campus tours will also be departing every 15 minuets in the Afternoon from 1:00-3:00pm.


Session 3: Divisional Highlights/More Specialized Presentations

Exploring the College of Arts and Science:  Learn more about the oldest and largest academic division at Miami University. This session will include an overview of the college and you'll hear about some of our majors and minors from a panel of our esteemed faculty. We will conclude with a question and answer session.

Premedical and Pre-Health Studies: Mallory Wilson Center for Healthcare Education:  Join us and learn about premedical and pre-health advising, our co-major requirements, and preceptorship/shadowing opportunities.  

College of Arts and Science: Lunch and Learn:  Join faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences for lunch while you learn more about academic programs in our largest academic division! This is a great chance to ask questions and learn more about faculty on campus in a more personal and informal way. All families will have the opportunity to eat lunch in a dinning hall as it fits into their schedule.

Education Programs - Departmental Information Session:  Meet with faculty in the departments of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry and Educational Psychology to learn more about the education majors, including primary education, adolescent and young adult education, and special education. Learn about field experience and student teaching opportunities, study abroad programs, and our 4+1 graduate programs.

Social Work - Departmental Information Session:  Meet with faculty in the social work department to learn more about the social work major, including courses, experiential learning opportunities, career pathways, and our 4+1 graduate program for undergraduate social work majors.

Session 4: Afternoon Exploration

Lunch: As fits into you schedule.

Campus Tours: Join us for a 45-minute walking tour of Miami University led by our student tour guides. This tour will highlight academics and student life, all while giving you the chance to hear firsthand what it’s like to be a Miami student. Tours will leave every 15 minutes beginning at 1 p.m., with the last departing at 3 p.m. The campus tour will end at the Residence Hall Tour until 2:30 p.m.

Residence Hall Tours: The residence hall tour will be led by our Residence Life staff.
